World Twenty20 title in the Caribbean next year

LONDON: Pakistan will begin the defence of their World Twenty20 title in the Caribbean next year against fellow Asian Test nation Bangladesh in St Lucia on May 1, organisers announced on Sunday.
Pakistan, who beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets in last month’s World Twenty20 final at Lord’s, will complete its group phase programme at the same venue the following day against Australia.
The West Indies will open the event in Guyana on April 30 against one of two qualifiers for the tournament.
If the West Indies, also in a group with England, reaches the second round Super Eights, they will then go on to play in St Lucia and Barbados, something that would see the hosts play in all three locations for the men’s tournament.
India, the inaugural 2007 champions, will start their campaign to regain the trophy with a match against the other qualifier in St Lucia on May 1.
The qualifiers, who will join the 10 full or Test nations in the Caribbean next year, will be drawn from the top two sides at a tournament due to be staged in the United Arab Emirates in October.
During the 2007 50-over World Cup in the Caribbean, organisers were criticised for pricing local fans out of the market for tickets.
But for this event, the maximum price for a first round double-header ticket in Guyana will be 10 US dollars, with Under-16s getting in for free.
And for finals day in Barbados, tickets will range in price from 10 dollars to 40 dollars.
Entry to all first round matches in the women’s tournament will be free.
England, who beat New Zealand last month at Lord’s in the inaugural women’s World Twenty20 final, start their quest for back-to-back titles against Australia in St Kitts, where all the women’s group matches are being played, on May 5.
The men’s and women’s semi-finals will be played in St Lucia, with the finals of both events taking place in Barbados on May 16.
Next year will see Zimbabwe back in the World Twenty20.
They were forced into withdrawing from this year’s tournament after the British Government said they would not grant them entry visas because of their disapproval of the policies of Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe.
The World Twenty20 is intended to be held every two years.
But the decision to hold the third edition of the tournament in 2010 was taken after the 2008 50-overs-a-side Champions Trophy, due to be played in Pakistan, was postponed because of security concerns.
The next Champions Trophy is now due to be played in South Africa this coming September and October.
Without the 2010 World Twenty20 in the Caribbean, there was a risk it would have next been played in the same year as the next 50-over World Cup, due to be staged in the Indian sub-continent in 2011.
By having the World Twenty20 in between its two major 50-over tournaments, the Champions Trophy and the World Cup, the International Cricket Council hopes to ensure a better spread of its major events.

The 17-year-old left-armer, playing his first Test match, grabbed three wickets for two runs as Sri Lanka collapsed from their lunch score of 70-2 to 101-5 soon after resumption. The hosts went to tea on the third day struggling at 182-7 in their second innings, an overall lead of 132 runs with three wickets in hand at the Galle International Stadium. Angelo Mathews (27) and Nuwan Kulasekera (25) steadied the ship with 35 run partnership before the former fell too a wide Abdur Rauf delivery, caught by Salman Butt at third-man. Kulasekra was then accounted for by Saeed Ajmal, missing a straight one to be trapped LBW. Thushara then hit a few lusty blows, but just when he threatened to take the Sri Lankan score to some respactibility, last man Ajantha Mendis fell to a quick, straight ball off Ajmal. The hosts ended their innings at 217 thus leaving Pakistan with a total of 168 with 39 overs and two days to go. Paranavitana, top scorer in Sri Lanka's first innings with 72, once again held the innings together with 49, but found little support from the top order. The final set alone of an unforgettable Centre Court duel lasted 95 minutes before Roddick’s mishit forehand gave Federer his sixth Wimbledon title and the record of 15 grand slam titles he so cherished. Fittingly, Pete Sampras, the only other man to have previously won 14 slams, was sat in the Royal Box as a match of unrelenting drama stretched into a fifth hour. ‘Andy I want to say you’re going to come back and win one, I’m sure,’ Federer said on court as a shattered Roddick contemplated his third defeat to Federer in a Wimbledon final. ‘Today I was on the lucky side. It feels funny to have the trophy back. It feels great. It was a crazy match, my head’s still spinning. It’s an unbelievable moment in my career.’ Few imagined that Federer’s seventh consecutive Wimbledon final could come anywhere near close to emulating last year’s epic when he lost his crown to Rafael Nadal — a five-set thriller that ended in near darkness. Internet connectivity depends on having an Internet (protocol, IP) address. The current IP version in use is 4 and the unallocated pool of available IPv4 address space is depleting and according to various reports, 85% of the total four billion IPv4 address were already allocated by 2008 where the possible estimated exhaustion of the IPv4 addresses will be around 2011 or 2012.

According to the IPv6 Forum website, the IPv4 Exhaustion Counter’s http://inetcore.com/project/ipv4ec/index_en.html present status is:
Reserved Blocks (IANA) 11% = 30/256 blocks
Until X-day estimation: 736 days
The new solution over IPv4 is IPv6, a new protocol promising to offer the possibility of more unique Internet addresses. IPv6 has been available for sometime now and allows for virtually almost unlimited address space. The adoption of IPv6 has been very slow todate and for the Internet to connect billions of people as well as smart environments comprised of devices that need to run on the Internet to provide new communications services are all need of the addressing space that IPv6 provides.
As earlier mentioned, smart environments use new kinds of applications, like sensor networks, intelligent agents and communication devices. Such an example may be quoted from the construction industry where they are using IPv6 to create smart and intelligent buildings. IPv6 is used to enable Internet based remote controlled security cameras or manage home appliances from remote locations. These smart buildings also save on energy which is a very critical global concern nowadays.
In terms of the state of adoption of IPv6, we stand at the bare minimum. Despite the fact that Telecommunication and Internet Service Provider companies have adequate knowledge about IPv6, the general population that uses the Internet is yet unaware of the issues of IPv4 address space depletion and IPv6 address space counter solutions. There is an expert group of networking engineers and professionals that have been sandbox testing IPv6 in Pakistan but how will this knowledge be passed on to the general Internet user population remains an issue of concern.
Enabling the IPv6 address block is very necessary at this point in time to enable sustainable growth in the use of the Internet but making the switch from IPv4 to IPv6 remains a difficult and daunting task as it takes both time and resources as well as a commitment by all stakeholders including the Government, Private Sector, Academia and Civil Society. David Morgan, the ICC president, has hinted that Test cricket may be reduced to four days to protect and enrich the game's oldest format in the face of lucrative Twenty20 leagues like the IPL. The suggestion comes in the wake of a few other changes that are being mooted, including a two-tier format and day-night Tests to attract more crowds.

"Another thought that many people have, that we are examining is whether Test match cricket can be played over four days rather than five," Morgan told the India Today magazine. "I would be very surprised if within a year you haven't seen some significant changes in Test match cricket."

Morgan felt it wouldn't be too difficult for players to make a mental shift from five days to four. He added that Test cricket needed many more adjustments, and that special cricket balls would have to be made to facilitate night Tests in white clothing.

"We need better over-rates, better pitches that give a good balance between bat and ball and we need to consider day-night Test cricket," Morgan said. "There is great support for it, the issue is the colour of the ball and the quality of the ball. It would be a pity if Test match cricket - day-night - had to be played with a white ball and therefore coloured clothing.

"We are looking very closely at ball manufacturing design that replicates a red ball, maybe an orange ball, a ball that could still allow us to play in white clothing and still at night."

The two-tier structure was recently mooted by Dave Richardson, the ICC general manager for cricket, to divide the stronger and weaker teams and make the format more competitive. The ICC has also given the go ahead for the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) from October following trials in specific series over the last year. Umpires will have greater scope to decide on bad-light interruptions and the penalities for slow over-rates have also been increased.

With so much emphasis on Twenty20 and the enrichment of Test cricket, Morgan was very confident of the survival of the 50-over game in its current form, now with batting Powerplays and free-hits added to spice it up. He also defended the presence of the Champions Trophy in an already crowded calendar, despite calls for it to be scrapped.

The Champions Trophy, in South Africa in September, now features only the top eight teams and is a shorter tournament compared to previous editions.

"It will be played over a shorter period and we are certain it will rejuvenate the Champions Trophy brand," he said. "The brand needed polishing, rejuvenating, it needed remodeling and this event will be a very, very exciting and successful event I'm sure. It will be the event that will give fifty overs cricket its profile back, give it a boost without a doubt."

England to host Pakistan Tests against Australia

Pakistan and Australia will play two Tests and two Twenty20 internationals in England next July, after the England & Wales Cricket Board reached a staging agreement with their Pakistan counterparts.

"We've reached a contractual agreement with the PCB, although the nature of those details remains confidential at the moment for obvious reasons," an ECB spokesman told Cricinfo. "We haven't agreed on the venues yet, that will have to be determined by the Major Match Group, but clearly we will want to do that as soon as practically possible so that we can market the games."

The decision follows hot on the heels of Pakistan's superb showing in the World Twenty20, in which they beat Sri Lanka in the final at Lord's, having been supported throughout the tournament by arguably the most vociferous and passionate fans in the country. With virtually no prospect of cricket returning to Pakistan in the near future after the terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka team bus at Lahore in March, England promises to provide the exiled team with the perfect home from home.

"The Pakistan team performed outstandingly well in the World T20 tournament in England and were worthy world champions," said the ECB chairman, Giles Clarke. "The passion of the support for their team in England demonstrated why this country is an ideal venue for these matches against Australia."

"The warm relations between our two Boards has developed further under the leadership of the current PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt, with whom I enjoy an excellent working relationship, and ECB is delighted to support Pakistan in staging these matches."

For the final of the World Twenty20 at Lord's, the vast majority of the fans in the stadium were Pakistani, and according to Keith Bradshaw, MCC's chief executive, the atmosphere they created was "electric". He was very hopeful that the experience of that match would persuade the Major Match Group that Lord's is the logical venue to stage such a game.

"I think we've said all along we're right behind the concept of neutral Tests," said Bradshaw. "We are the home of cricket and so our doors are open. We are very keen to stage the match and we'll be bidding hard to stage a Test.

"When Pakistan were here for the final the atmosphere was electric, as it was the week before when India were here. I know that Tests in London are still very strong in terms of attendance, both here and at The Oval, and to keep Test cricket as the pinnacle of the game it would be a logical place to stage such a match."

Another venue with strong claims to hosting a Test is Headingley, given the size of the Pakistani population in and around Leeds and Bradford. "We feel that of all of the venues, given our demographic and track record in staging matches, we'd be very well placed and would make Pakistan feel at home," Stewart Regan, Yorkshire's chief executive, told Cricinfo.

"Nothing has changed since the previous discussions in the media several weeks ago. We have put our hat in the ring and said we would be very interested in talking to the ECB and PCB about staging one of the Test matches."

Regardless of the enthusiastic response to the news, there remain several hurdles to be overcome before the series can be set in stone, not least the thorny issue of TV rights. In November 2008, the PCB agreed a US$140.5 million five-year television contract with Taj Entertainment Network (Ten Sports), with a clause that enabled series to take place at neutral venues in the event of an adverse security situation. It remains to be seen whether BSkyB, who hold the rights to England home series, will contest the staging of such a contest on their turf.

The ECB and PCB also confirmed that England will host Pakistan for four Tests, five ODIs and two T20Is in August and September of next year.

Clarke, meanwhile, has accepted the role of chairman of the ICC Pakistan Task Team, a body set up by the ICC to provide strategies and solutions to assist the PCB in protecting its position in international cricket.

"The Pakistan Cricket Board is faced with a very challenging situation at present and ECB in its role as a member of the global cricket community is keen to offer PCB all possible assistance at such a difficult time," said Clarke. "I am delighted to take on this role and will be liaising closely with my colleagues at PCB in the coming weeks and months."

Six months on from his resignation as England captain, Kevin Pietersen believes that the England dressing-room is a much healthier place for the blood-letting that took place during his spectacular falling-out with the former coach, Peter Moores. As a consequence he is quietly optimistic about the team's hopes of regaining the Ashes in the coming series against Australia. Back in January, Pietersen was forced to resign from a role he had held for barely five months, after details of a confidential email to the ECB was leaked to the media, in which he called for the removal of Moores as head coach, as well as a root-and-branch reform of England's team management structure. For a time the atmosphere within the squad was poisonous, as evidenced by their spectacular collapse to 51 all out in the decisive first Test against West Indies in Kingston one month later. Now, however, the mood within the squad could scarcely be more different, and on the eve of England's departure for a pre-Ashes bonding session, Pietersen spoke of the upbeat attitude ahead of the first Test in Cardiff on July 8. "The team is so happy, everyone knows how excited we are, and how everyone's gelled," he said during a Vodafone sponsors' event in Essex. "We've seen how Andy Flower has settled into his job and how well Straussy [Andrew Strauss] is doing. "That's the reason I did what I did in January. The team wasn't happy, things weren't right and England cricket was going nowhere. But I believe in the last six months the team has made big progress before a huge, huge series against Australia. I'm very happy, and everyone's happy." If Pietersen's version of events contained a touch of revisionism, then the main thrust of his argument was unmistakeable. Under Moores' dogmatic guidance, he felt that England's players had not been permitted enough of a say in the day-to-day running of team affairs, but with Flower and Strauss at the helm, all such problems have dissipated. "If things hadn't changed, I wouldn't have been as confident as I am now [about winning back the Ashes]," he added. "This team has done well enough in the last six months to challenge Australia. I'm not going to say we are going to win, I'm just going to say we'll be alright. It's about the way we've played, the happiness in the dressing room, and the way the players have had a voice, and how they've wanted to go about doing things. It hasn't just been one voice, but a collective among the management committee. "Everybody can see the progress we've made," said Pietersen. "It wasn't just about January either. There were a lot of players who weren't happy, and a lot of captains who weren't happy as well. So fair dos to both Andys, they've been absolutely fantastic, and to all the players, they have all bought into it, and made sure we're a happy dressing-room whether we win or we lose." "To be fair, that could have been quite a big moment in the context of the summer if we didn't come back from that, but what really encouraged me was that the guys had two die-or-die fixtures against India and Pakistan and won them both." Now all the focus is on England's biggest challenge of the summer, and for Pietersen, who says he is now pain-free after the Achilles problems that have hampered his season, the prospect of renewing his rivalry with Australia is tantalising. "A series like this grabs all your attention, and you can't be thinking about anything else other than what's coming now. But as professional sportsmen at the top of our games, it's something we should thrive on and enjoy. Challenges like this come along every two or three years against Australia, and South Africa at the end of the year will be just as tough. You've got to go out and enjoy them, you can't wimp out of them." "I think whoever plays the best cricket over the 25 days will win the series," he added. "I think we've got a good chance, but I don't believe for one second that Australia are not as good a team without the likes of Warne and Gilchrist because their strength in depth is pretty good. Discussions between the PCB, ECB and Cricket Australia (CA) are at an advanced stage as the three parties try and find a way of rescheduling Pakistan's 'home' series against Australia in England next summer.

Australia were due to tour Pakistan for a full series in March 2008 but pulled out because of security concerns. The tour was postponed, but after the terrorist attacks on the Sri Lankan team in March this year and the subsequent ICC move to take the 2011 World Cup away from Pakistan, international cricket within Pakistan is all but ruled out for the next few years. The PCB, therefore, is looking for ways to minimize the impact on its FTP and is actively looking at neutral venues where it can stage future home commitments.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai, where Pakistan just played an ODI series against Australia, is one option but England has always been another, ever since Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman, floated the idea last year.

"There is a lot of discussion going on between the three parties," an official involved in the negotiations told Cricinfo. "Nothing has been finalised just yet but we are getting closer to the possibility that Pakistan plays its Tests against Australia in England next year."

There are obstacles still in the way before any agreement is reached. The first is the itinerary: CA wants to play two Tests and two Twenty20 internationals, while the Pakistan board is keener on a three-Test and three-ODI series. Whichever schedule is settled upon, it will have to be worked in between three international series in the English summer: Bangladesh are touring in May-June for a Test and ODI series and West Indies in July and August. Additionally, in June, Australia are due to play a five-match ODI series with England. Further complication may come in the form of the P20, the ECB's answer to the IPL, which begins from next summer and may involve international players.

Other hurdles are TV rights and the costs involved. Sky Television has the rights to England's home Tests but this covers those contests where England are the hosts. As the rights holder to Pakistan's home contests, Ten Sports are likely to be the broadcaster. "The TV rights are a pressing question," the official said. "It is crucial for the PCB to continue to benefit from broadcasting rights and Ten Sports and Sky will have to come up with some kind of compromise to ensure that happens. It shouldn't be a problem."

As the PCB found in the series against Australia in the UAE, the costs involved in hosting a 'home' series at a neutral venue are prohibitive. Cash-strapped already - though perhaps not as much as initially thought - the cost of holding a series in England will have to be weighed up seriously. "As it was in Dubai, the costs in the UK will be very high," a PCB official said. "That is something we really have to look at, in terms of how much revenue we will be able to generate."

The venues for the series are yet to be decided though cities such as Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham - traditionally home to large British Asian populations - are likely to be on any shortlist.

LAHORE: Hundreds of fans waiting for the return of the Twenty20 World Cup-winning Pakistan team at Lahore Airport were left disappointed in the early hours of Tuesday after security officials bypassed the well wishers and whisked the squad away from another terminal.

‘We changed the (travel) plan due to security reasons and drove players and team officials in a bus to the National Cricket Academy,’ police official Umar Virk told media, who did not mention any specific threat to the team.
Fans started to gather at the airport hours ahead of the 3:30 a.m. arrival time after watching Pakistan win the inaugural T20 World Cup by eight wickets over Sri Lanka in the final at Lord’s on Monday.
The excited fans – mostly youngsters – danced to the beat of drums and chanted slogans ‘Pakistan zindabad’ (long live Pakistan) before they realised the cricketers had already left from another terminal.
‘Our hearts are broken as we could not greet our heroes,’ 20-year-old Danish Shams said.
‘We came here only to have a glimpse of them, but now the police officials are saying that they (players) have already left in a bus.’
Zeeshan Qaiser, another fan said he was ‘deeply hurt’ after not getting to welcome of any of the Pakistan team.
‘Not only me, every one present here is hurt,’ he said. ‘We just wanted to have a glimpse of them, we are tired from shouting slogans in praise of them and now they didn’t show up.’
An official of the Pakistan Cricket Board said that four players – captain Younis Khan, final’s man of the match Shahid Afridi, Fawad Alam and Abdul Razzaq – did not accompany the team to Lahore and will be arriving later.
The Pakistan players were elated over their victory – the country’s biggest since winning the 1992 World Cup – but were also disappointed that fans could not greet them at the airport.
‘I apologise to the whole nation as a large number of people kept waiting for us at the airport, but we could not come out due to security reasons,’ left-arm paceman Sohail Tanvir told local media after arriving at the cricket academy amid tight security.
Coach Intikhab Alam described the victory as the ‘best gift’ for the nation after a long time, but said it was ‘unfortunate’ that fans could not greet their heroes.
‘People have not slept for the last two days, but unfortunately such things do happen and I want to thank them,’ Alam, who was also the coach of Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup team, said.
‘We should win more laurels for the country and I don’t think we can give a better gift than this to the whole nation.’

World gets to put Windows 7 software to the test

SAN FRANCISCO: A nearly-final version of Windows 7 makes its world debut on Tuesday, giving people a chance to tell Microsoft what they love or hate about the new-generation operating system.

The release will be available at microsoft.com/downloads in a move intended to signal that the software giant is putting finishing touches on an operating system that it hopes will escape criticism heaped on its predecessor Vista.

‘It appears that they are on target,’ said analyst Michael Cherry of private firm Directions on Microsoft, which specializes in tracking the US software giant.

‘I think we need to be cautious though. Windows 7 is still in development.

While Microsoft is certainly moving on to the next logical milestone, this is

still a test version of the operating system.’Copies of the Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) software were made available to developers last week and early reviews have praised the operating system for its stability and for avoiding problems that marred Vista's image.

‘Listening to our partners and customers has been fundamental to the development of Windows 7,’ Microsoft senior vice president for Windows business Bill Veghte said in announcing the RC release.

‘We heard them and worked hard to deliver the highest quality release candidate in the history of Windows.’ Complaints about Vista included that it was not compatible with some software designed for the previous-generation Windows XP operating system and that it was too much for netbooks or older computers to handle.

Cherry is testing Windows 7 on netbooks, increasingly popular low-cost mobile computers designed essentially for accessing the Internet and running a few simple programs.

‘That is one of the places where Vista didn’t do a good job,’ Cherry said.

‘I think Microsoft has been very cautious with Windows 7.’ The RC release indicates that little is likely to be changed in the final version of Windows 7 and that companies can begin tailoring software or hardware to the operating system, according to Microsoft.

Touted features include compatibility with touch-screen computer controls, faster video handling and being friendly to even light-weight hardware such as netbooks.

‘Windows 7 is everything that Vista should have been,’ said analyst Rob Enderle of Enderle Group in Silicon Valley.

‘It's less annoying and it's a fraction of the size. The only thing working against them is the economy; people without money aren't going to buy no matter how good the product.’Enthusiastic early reviews of Windows 7 are stoking speculation that Microsoft will release a final version of the new operating system in time for the year-end holiday shopping season.

‘It makes sense that Microsoft should have it pre-Christmas,’ Cherry said of Windows 7.

‘I think you need to keep in mind that if something comes up in testing they are going to take the delay and get it right. Microsoft doesn't need a problem on their hands.’Microsoft and some analysts have advised people to prepare for the Windows 7 release by upgrading to Vista instead of trying to leapfrog the maligned version of the operating system.

Cherry ignores such advice, saying he sees each new operating system as a chance to clean out his computer and start fresh.

He will back up his data, install Windows 7 on his computer and then transfer files a bit at a time, getting rid of files he hasn't opened for a while.

‘I use it as a complete housekeeping move,’ Cherry said of installing a new operating system. ‘I will always do a fresh install; this way I know I am not bringing any baggage with me.’
